EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT LAWYERING AND LEADERSHIP
Co-sponsored with the Tennessee Commission on CLE Specialization

May 21, 2008

OVERVIEW:  In every situation involving “lawyering” we are involved with perceiving how others think and feel, knowing how we want them to think and feel, determining the difference between the current situation and what we want to have happen. Whether we are trying to generate trust, fear or something in between, feelings are often a mainstay of our professional practice. However, there is not a lot in law school that teaches us how to use feelings to create the changes we want and need to be successful. Charles Wolfe’s application techniques will increase your success in your practice – and in your life!

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS:
Imagine your client owns a small shopping center. He has lost a key tenant but has received an inquiry from a client who needs rent reductions or other incentives to sign an agreement, but how might be a source of increased traffic to the center in the future. Your client needs all the rent he can get right now, but he also needs the center to succeed as a whole over the next few years. Can these questions help your client achieve a good outcome?

  • How do you feel?
  • How do you think the other party feels?
  • How do you want to feel?
  • How do you want the other party to feel?

Or suppose your secretary’s mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. You’ve tried to be understanding, but over the past few months this matter has intruded more and more into the office and has affected her productivity. Other staff members are beginning to complain about the effect on their workloads. Now your stomach hurts because you know you have to talk to her about it and you cannot think of any way this conversation could go well. Can “emotional intelligence” help you through this conversation in a way that will both make a difference in our secretary’s performance and leave both of you feeling okay?

This seminar is a “must attend” for lawyers who want to create greater success in their practice – and in their lives!
