SO YOU WANNA BE A JUDGE . . .

JULY 9, 2008

OVERVIEW:  At some point in their careers, most lawyers consider the possibility of becoming a judge. In Tennessee there is a clearly defined procedure for pursuing that goal. Adopted by the General Assembly in 1994, the Tennessee Plan involves a 17-member screening panel known as the Judicial Selection Commission, which recommends three persons to the Governor for possible appointment to each vacant judgeship.

Seminar presenters will answer many of your questions about becoming a judge.

The faculty are Bill Purcell, former Nashville Mayor, who as House Majority Leader helped pass the legislation which created the Commission, and Bill Farmer, a current member of the Commission. Mayor Purcell will discuss the politics and policy of the legislation, and Mr. Farmer will talk about how the Commission operates.

YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT:

  • The history of the Tennessee Plan.
  • The details of the current statute, including changes made since 1994.
  • The composition of the Commission and how it conducts its business.
  • The recently proposed changes to the Tennessee Plan.
