Summary
Beyond Zealous Advocacy:
The Lawyer as Public Citizen

Presented by the NBA's NEW Public Citizen Committee
1.0 Dual CLE CREDIT
This CLE examines the Preamble to the Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct and the ABA Model Rules, which describe lawyers as “public citizens.” The program will focus on the historical background of the "public citizen" descriptor. The program will also explore some competing interpretive paradigms for what that term means—from neutral partisanship and zealous advocacy to more justice-oriented conceptions of professional identity. How should the obligation to act as a public citizen inform a lawyer’s view of their obligation to clients, courts, and society? Does our duty to improve the law and promote justice conflict with zealous representation? Find out in this CLE, which is available for dual credit.
NBA Public Citizens Committee Mission:
The NBA’s Public Citizen committee promotes civics, civility, and collaboration. The Committee connects lawyers with the community to engage actively with our democratic institutions, the judicial system, and the Rule of Law
