Historical Committee

The NBA Historical Committee is the repository for the history of the Nashville Bar Association. It was formally organized in 2008 following the death of longtime NBA historian, David Rutherford.

The committee also produces a FREE CLE seminar each year pertaining to a high-profile event that has happened in the history of the Nashville Bar. The program is always FREE and is a huge success, year after year.

The Historical Committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the NBA office and has four standing subcommittees (see below). A brown bag lunch begins at 11:30am and the official meeting is from 12:00 to 1:00pm. All meetings include the best possible storytelling.

The Memorial Service Committee oversees the semi-annual NBA Memorial Services at the Downtown Presbyterian Church—held in May and November—in honor of those in the Nashville legal community who have recently passed away. The memorial resolutions presented at the service are read on the minutes of the Chancery Court and are added to the collection of more than 100 years of resolutions.

The Oral History Committee conducts video interviews with senior NBA members—must be age 65 or older—and others in the local legal community as their careers draw to a close. These histories are available at NashvilleBar.org/OralHistories and on the NBA YouTube Channel. For more information or to schedule your time, contact Rebecca Lyford or Carol McCoy.

The Acquisition Committee acquires materials that are historically significant to the Nashville legal community.

The Preservation Committee preserves historically significant materials and maintains a growing library of books written by local lawyers or concerning activities and events involving the local legal community.
